pioneer: but he deserves further honor for his generous
heart a11d liberal hand. \hen. in 1858. the raging Platte
overowed and destroyed for us. at the Platte City Water
Mills. many thousand bushels of grain. which had been
deposited by farmers. he was the onlv one who offered to
sustain the loss of his wheat. But I knew that. by law. We
were to suffer the loss, because we had mixed his Wheat with
other lots; a11d we deelined his generous offer. Whenever
he left home. he lled his saddle-bags with the choicest
fruits. for his friends. He lies beside his father in the
fa1nilv burving-ground. His widow md John Ellet. (Seej)
