THE BURNES LINEAGE.
1. The first of the family of which there is reliable record was
Campbell Burness (sic), sometimes written Burnliies. He was
born in Edinburgh. Scotland. about 1718. His connection with the
political troubles of 1745 brought about the confiscation of his
property, and he lied to the mountains of Batlock. in Kincardine
shire, Where he died. disappointed and disheartened. He was
buried in the cliureliyard of Lochlea, near Alloway Hill, 011 the
Doon. His children were left without means, a charge upon his
ounge1 brother. William Burness. whose Wealth consisted chiey
of a. noble and motherly wife, whose maiden name was .;"11es
Brown.
II. Among the children thus left was Peter Burness. He
was born in Kincardineshire in 1752. V7ithout education or for-
tune. Peter came to America in 1771, and settled at. or near.
Norfolk. Va., Where. in 1777, he married Charlotte Hayden, and
in his marriage record for the rst time the name is written
Burnes. He removed to Spottsylvania 00., V a.. Where
III. James Burnes was born February 14, 1779. and Dan1
Burnes November 17, 1781. Their mother died February 8, 17 82.
and in 1790 Peter Burnes married a second time; but his Wife was
of violent temper. and so disagreeable to her step-sons that they
went to Ghillicothe, Ohio, in 1803. But James Burnes returned
to Virginia, and married December 29. 1805, Mary Thompson. Of
this marriage were born seven sons and three daughters: 1, ,el
son; 2. Lewis; 3. Fielding; 4. Daniel D.; 5. Milton: 6, James N.:
7. CalvinF.: 8. IIarv; 9. Charlotte: 10, Susan Burnes. Of these,
Milton. Mar-v. and Charlotte died in infancy.
In 1824 Mr. James Burnes removed to hlorgantown, Ind.. and
subsequently to Vermilion County, in the same State. He be-
came a merchant. and laid off the town of Springeld. The father
possessed sound judgment, with energgv and independence. In
1836 Lewis Burnes. on horseback. Visited the Platte country. and
brougzht back such a favorable report that in 1837 the Whole family
came west. Lewis and his family settled in the Missouri bottom,
near 1arlev. Fielding and his father located a mile or two north
of Camden Point. opened a store. and called it Pmena Vista. A fter
a few w-ars. Lewis and Daniel D. engzaged in the mercantile lmsi-
ness at \eston. The poliry of the father was to unite his sons in
lmsiness. that thev inigzlit be of mutual help. Thus the power and
influenee of the family was aug1nented. and. in politics and b11si-
ness. the- lu-ranie the most influential tamilv in northwest .V[is-
souri. lheir united powers gave them wealth and honor.
