History Note:1617 Faraon Street was constructed in 1885 for William St. John Elliot Marshall and his wife Constance Blessing Runcie. A son, Elliot Marshall, was mayor of St. Joseph from 1914-1922. Constance Runcie's mother, Constance Fauntleroy Runcie, had, in 1859, organized the first woman's club in the United States at New Harmony, Indiana. New Harmony was a utopian colony founded on socialist principles which attracted some of America's best scientists and writers of the 19th century. Constance Runcie was in fact a granddaughter of New Harmony's founder, Robert Owen. In St. Joseph, Constance Runcie, in 1894, founded a woman's organization known as the Runcie Club which exists to this day. The Runcie Club is one of American's oldest women's organizations. The Runcie Club initially met at the home next door that was destroyed by fire. -
